As Lieutenant General Sami Sadat stepped onto a C-17 military plane at Kabul International Airport on August 19, 2021, bloodshed engulfed the country he loved and had spent his life fighting for.

 

Desperate Afghans surrounded the runway, trying to escape the and the inhumanity that would soon take over as Western forces left.

 

The three-star general in the Army was exhausted, humiliated, quietly nursing a shrapnel wound to his neck and about to make the hardest decision of his life: To leave his homeland behind. Staying would have likely meant death for him and his troops.
